Jo Delahaut
About Jo Delahaut
Artist Jo Delahaut was an essential figure in geometric abstraction. He trained at the Liège Academy, where he obtained a doctorate in the History of Art.
He started out painting expressionist, figurative canvases in the 1940s. Over the years his work became more minimalist as he shifted more towards geometric abstraction. The colour of the surfaces play an important role in his artwork. His works aim to evoke a sense of intellectual activity, a metalanguage directed to the mind.
Delahaut was one of the founding members of Art Abstrait, a Belgian art group established in 1952. The group focused on bringing together artists dedicated to abstraction in art.
He is considered one of the most important post-war painters in Belgium. The Museum of Contemporary Art (M HKA) and the Royal Museum of Fine Arts (KMSKA) in Antwerp both display works by Jo Delahaut.
Born in 1911, passed away in 1992.
