Pol Bury
Pol Bury was a Belgian painter and sculptor who was a member of the Walloon surrealist movement and the CoBrA art movement. He became famous for his fountains and his kinetic art.
He enrolled in the Academy of Fine Arts in Mons at the age of 16. There he got in touch with the work of Yves Tanguy, which inspired him to start painting. He was also influenced by René Magritte’s work.
From 1947 onwards, Bury’s style became more abstract. In the 1950s and 1960s, he forged his own path, creating three-dimensional, moving works and becoming one of the founders of spatial, kinetic art. Time in motion became an essential ingredient of his art. In 1969, he created his first monumental work: a fountain for the University of Iowa.
His graphic work comprises abstract collages as well as series of transformations of drawings or photos of famous people and buildings.
