Stefan De Jaeger
His first exhibitions occurred in 1979. However, despite his successes, he then dropped out of sight for roughly fifteen years to travel, reflect, observe, discover and internalize. He finally returned about six years ago.
It is with similar aspirations and the same instinct that he journeyed through various forms of visual expression, using different media: video, polaroid, photo paper, plain paper and canvas.
His need to renew is overpowering and all-consuming. The need to hurl at the canvas all that affects, influences and enamours him – be it unalterable or ephemeral. All of that translates into space, a palette of hues & nuances, bold colours and seemingly simple brush strokes that may appear elementary, effortless, but in fact they arise from profound emotions, needing to be stripped down and synthetized to harmonize on a canvas.
A canvas which ultimately should convey a meaning both for its maker as for he who might eventually own it.
Stefan is also concerned the canvas could be misread. That it might not be perceived as a generosity, a genuine interest in the other’s emotions, and might be reduced to the mere expression of his sensitivity.
